ADHD stands for attention deficit hyperactivity disorder, named as such due to the variety of signs and symptoms associated with it. It is a condition often misunderstood by many due to lack of understanding of its primary signs and symptoms and the real effects of which in a person’s everyday. In order to overcome ADHD, one must know that it is not a communicable disease, it is a neurobehavioral developmental disorder, meaning that it occurs at some point in a child as he or she is growing up. It is a series of traits that makes up a diagnosis if a person has ADHD. Three primary features of ADHD are prominent, namely, impulsivity, inattentiveness and hyperactivity.
- Impulsivity is characterised mainly by having difficulty waiting for things or stay in one place, blurting out answers before the question is finished, interrupting people when they are talking and just being impatient generally among others.
- Inattentiveness is displayed through having a hard time following simple directions or complete a simple task, daydreaming, easily gets confused, easily gets bored and wants to transfer to another activity immediately after starting, etc.
- Hyperactivity are seen through being fidgety or squirming in seats, moving around too often, talking non stop and not letting the other person speak, touching several objects without regard for any rules or policies, etc.
Now, I know that all of us are guilty of having some of these behaviors at some point in our lives but it is the degree of how these signs and symptoms affects a person’s life that is important to know. Some people can control themselves in a considerable manner like trying to stop and think of the consequences of their action before carrying them out. However, some people have trouble in doing so. Eventually, these traits could carry on to adulthood and have ill effects on a person’s dealings with himself or with people around him. Common treatments for ADHD include behavioural treatment which highly encourages giving choices that somewhat controls the environment of the child. Stimulant drugs are also prescribed by doctors but this method has been controversial due to some side-effects experienced by some people. Family therapy is a popular method which includes the home environment to improve the child’s attention. Whatever management one chooses in overcoming ADHD, it is important to know that consistency is a key role in its implementation. With the right integration of support from friends and family, a person’s ADHD can be a source of renewed focus and even genius as some prominent persons in history have been said to have ADHD.
